Ο Βασίλης Κολώνας γεννήθηκε στη Θεσσαλονίκη, όπου και τελείωσε τις σπουδές του στο Τμήμα Αρχιτεκτόνων του ΑΠΘ. Συνέχισε τις σπουδές του στους τομείς της Συντήρησης Μνημείων, της Ιστορίας της Τέχνης και της Μουσειολογίας στο Παρίσι, όπου, παράλληλα, εργάστηκε στη Γαλλική Ακαδημία Αρχιτεκτονικής. Από το 1992 είναι Διδάκτωρ του Τμήματος Αρχιτεκτόνων του ΑΠΘ.
Έχει συμμετάσχει σε επιστημονικές συναντήσεις στην Ελλάδα και το εξωτερικό, ενώ μελέτες του έχουν δημοσιευθεί σε ελληνικά και ξένα βιβλία και περιοδικά. Κύριος άξονας των δραστηριοτήτων του είναι η μελέτη και η έρευνα της Ιστορίας της Αρχιτεκτονικής του 19ου και 20ού αιώνα στην Ελλάδα και τις χώρες της ανατολικής Μεσογείου.
Έχει διδάξει στο μεταπτυχιακό σεμινάριο του Τμήματος Ιστορίας της Τέχνης - Νεότερης Ιστορίας στο Πανεπιστήμιο Κρήτης (2000-2002, 2005) και από το 2002 είναι αναπληρωτής καθηγητής στο Τμήμα Αρχιτεκτόνων του Πανεπιστημίου Θεσσαλίας.
