Description:

This book has no pretensions to being academic. On purpose its author has not read any other material connected with Ritsos's "Iconostasis of Anonymous Saints" except the original. Needless to say, not out of disrespect for the scholars and other Ritsologists. But solely in order not to be influenced and placed in the awkward position of having to discard precious insights because someone else has expressed them before.

The structure of this book is so carefully planned and its 27 sections are so tightly interwoven that if we were obliged to remove one pebble or a single insight, the whole edifice would be in danger of collapsing. On the other hand, although certainly not "academic", this book is also definitely not intended for the large reading public. In a word, this book is offered to the readers who already love the work of Yannis Ritsos and merely need a kind of seafarer's map to guide them through the hither-and-thithering waters of the "Iconostasis". These precious Readers -however few they may be- are worth multitudes of others. And to them I deliver this "Companion" through the "Iconostasis", with a Joycean invocation: "Ab, Dedalus the Greeks, I must teach you. You must read them in the original. Thalatta! Thalatta! She is our great sweet mother. Come and look.
